So yeah, W5 isn't as bad as I feared it could have been, especially with all the controversy leading up to it, but it's also not as great as it could have been. The book is very nice looking, incredible production design, and holy shit, it's actually well laid out. It's mostly that the new setting feels bloodless.

Some of it makes sense for modern times; the controversial Native American tribes are now fairly flavorless Americans. The Ghost Council sounds like a Call of Duty spin-off subtitle, and still mad that they didn't go with the proposal of "Winter's Teeth" for NuWendigo. Galestalkers feel boring as hell, and for some reason "Gaucho" is suggested as an an entire archetype for this clan of the "North Wind," even though, well, we're talking about some of the Southernmost cultures of the world. Maybe it's the clan of the north of Chile, getting some Atacama Desert rep finally. Hart Wardens exist. Other tribes don't feel well defined either, other than the Red Talons, but they've always been exceptionally good for their theme. Most of the Black Furies depicted are male (and the woman is Yolandi Visser), and they've absorbed the Get of Fenris' militaristic side. Shadow Lords have hacktivist as an archetype, though that feels like the Glass Walker's thing (or Child of Gaia). The Bone Gnawers look wealthier than the Glass Walkers, and changes in technology and urbanism since the 90s make me wonder if we need these two to be different tribes. And as for some of the theming and the Gelt of Fenris debacle, well, we all allowed Donald Trump to live in our head rent free for half a decade, and our culture will never recover from this.

Honestly think that they should have pared these down even further, since they're so conceptually thin. (Don't want to say the Chronicles of Darkness "Five" but, hey if the model is there...). The Tribes have always been worse off for distinction than the Clans, Traditions/Conventions, and Kiths, and this made the problem worse. Maybe have the Glass Walkers fall to the Weaver, as was always a threatened fate before, and have a Wyrm Tribe (BSDs), a Weaver Tribe, Gaian Extremists (Cult of Fenris), and fully Umbral weirdoes (Stargazers).

It does have that same problem that Vampire art can have - apart from the Nosferatu and Tzimisce, it's often hard to look at a character and figure out what the fuck they're supposed to be. Old WtA leaned into stereotypes to get around that, and yeah, it won't fly today, but it also didn't replace it with anything interesting. The Clans have really strong identity and lore, and players can get deep into their favorites clans. I don't see anyone doing it with W5 tribes, except the Red Talons.

But there's other alterations that I don't quite understand. The oddest one is a rather subtle thing, but they dropped Whippoorwill as the patron spirit of the Black Spiral Dancers (totem is now taboo, Freud is smirking). It's just Bat now, which, alright, sure. It's just that I loved the choice of Whippoorwill since it's such a strange, quirky choice for the villain patron while Bat is such a safe option. Bats are cool and creepy, but Whippoorwill? Now that's interesting. Where else are you going to get that? I feel like not only have all the rough edges been sanded down, even the fun eccentricities of Werewolf have been lost.

On the other hand, it's not bad. The Umbra is still here. The lows aren't that low, just as the highs aren't particularly high (apart from, once again, art design and layout, which is 9/10). I do need to see how the game actually plays, though, since I do have some concerns about the Willpower and Rage Check economy of the gifts and combat actions. It feels a bit sparse, but I can't know without running a game.

My biggest problem though is that it feels like they wanted the theming, worldbuilding, and tone of Forsaken but had to use the Apocalypse IP. And Forsaken is right there, functional, and cheaper to pick up, so why should I invest in this?
